Seeking Interested Residents to Serve on Planning Commission & Board of Zoning Appeals
The Town of Oakland is seeking interested Town of Oakland residents to serve on the Oakland Board of Zoning Appeals for a three-year term or the Planning Commission for a five-year term.
The Planning Commission plays a vital role in shaping the long-term vision of Oakland. Members help guide the town’s growth and development by advising on the Comprehensive Plan, reviewing zoning and subdivision proposals, and making recommendations to ensure land use decisions reflect the best interests of the community.
The Board of Zoning Appeals reviews requests and appeals related to the town’s zoning laws. They can grant special exceptions, variances, hear challenges to zoning decisions, and help ensure that rules are applied fairly while balancing individual property rights with the community’s overall plan.
Serving on the either board is a meaningful way for citizens to actively participate in shaping Oakland’s future. The time commitment is modest, with meetings held as needed - typically about once per quarter - making it a manageable civic responsibility for residents with other commitments. State law mandates all board members take a one-time educational course after being appointed. The course is online and consists of reading material and answering multiple choice questions.
Interested residents must live within the town limits of Oakland. Members of the Planning Commission are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by a vote of the Town Council. To be considered, please complete the online interest form or provide a letter of interest and CV/resume to Town Hall at 15 South Third Street, Oakland, MD 21550.
