Water Conservation Requested Until Further Notice

The Town of Oakland is asking all water customers to conserve water until further notice while the Broadford Water Treatment Plant remains offline for water quality improvements.

The Town operates two water treatment plants. The Broadford Water Treatment Plant typically produces approximately five-sixths of the town's water, while the smaller Bradley Lane Water Treatment Plant produces approximately one-sixth. The Oakland plant has remained stable and is not experiencing the water quality issues affecting the Broadford plant. The Broadford plant was taken offline by the Oakland Water Superintendent on October 3 after high turbidity levels were detected. The Town is currently operating the Oakland plant on a modified schedule to meet demand while work is being completed at Broadford. The Town has begun cleaning the clarifiers and will conduct heavy filter washes as part of the quality improvement process at the Broadford plant.

Because the Town is currently relying on the smaller Bradley Lane Water Treatment Plant, we are asking customers to voluntarily reduce their water consumption until further notice to ensure that demand can be met.

Customers can help by:

  • Taking shorter showers.

  • Running only full dishwasher and laundry loads.

  • Reducing the total number of toilet flushes per day.

  • Avoiding unnecessary outdoor watering.

  • Delaying car washing and other non-essential uses of water.

  • Turning off the water while brushing teeth or performing other tasks where running water is not necessary.

  • Fixing leaking faucets, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures.

The Broadford plant will remain offline until turbidity levels consistently return to the normal operating range. The Town anticipates that the clarifier work will be completed later this week, after which heavy filter washes will begin. The total duration of the shutdown will depend on the time required for the clarifier work, the number of filter washes necessary, and lake discharge limitations.

The Town appreciates the community's cooperation with conservation efforts. Additional updates will be provided as the work progresses.
