Oakland Honors 2026

Oakland Honors Veterans with Downtown Banner Program

Oakland, MD (February 2026) — Main Street Oakland is excited to announce the return of the “Oakland Honors” Veteran Banner Program, a community initiative that recognizes and celebrates local veterans, past and present.

The program features double-sided, 24” x 48” banners displayed along US 219/Third Street and Oak Street from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. Each banner includes a photo, name, military branch, rank, and years of service. Veterans honored may be living or deceased, and banners are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Oakland Honors Veteran Banner Program is a meaningful way to recognize the sacrifice of the brave men and women who have served our country, while honoring the rich history of our town,

The cost for each banner is $175, payable to Town of Oakland along with the completed application. Applications are being accepted now through February 27, 2026. To receive an application, visit oaklandmd.gov or stop by The Town Hall.

Residents are encouraged to participate in this lasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

Guidelines and Specifications can be found on the Town of Oakland Website. www.oaklandmd.gov

 Banner Condition & Expiration Policy

Banners are designed for temporary display and are subject to weather, sun exposure, and normal wear overtime.

Each banner will remain installed for a minimum period of three (3) years from the installation date, or until the banner shows visible deterioration — whichever occurs first.

The Town reserves the right to remove any banner that becomes faded, torn, damaged, unsafe, or otherwise unsuitable for public display. The Town is not responsible for replacing banners that deteriorate due to normal weather exposure or aging.

Banner sponsors may choose to purchase a replacement banner at the current program rate if they wish to continue participation after expiration or removal.

Removed banners will not be stored by the Town unless prior arrangements are made.

 Resident Eligibility Guidelines

To ensure the program reflects the local community, banners may honor individuals who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Current or former residents of the Town of Oakland

  • Individuals with a documented family connection to Oakland

  • Veterans or honorees with significant ties to the Oakland community

  • Individuals who lived in the surrounding service area and maintained a meaningful connection to the Town

Final eligibility determinations are made by the Town to ensure consistency and fairness in program administration.
