Summary
The Class I Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of Town streets, alleys, storm drains, and related infrastructure. This position performs skilled and semi-skilled labor to ensure that the Town’s roads and public spaces remain safe, clean, and functional year-round. This position works closely with other staff and departments and must be a strong team-player.
The Class I Operator works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of General Services and may assist other divisions, including Facilities, during special projects or emergencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, snowplows, rollers, and other heavy or light equipment in the maintenance and repair of Town streets and rights-of-way.
Perform street and alley maintenance including paving, patching, grading, and drainage system upkeep.
Install and repair stormwater infrastructure, culverts, catch basins, and curbs.
Operate equipment for snow and ice removal, street sweeping, and debris cleanup.
Transport and spread materials such as stone, asphalt, and topsoil.
Perform basic preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.
Assist with street signage installation, line painting, and other traffic control measures.
Complete daily work logs and report equipment issues to supervisors.
Ensure safe work zones by setting up cones, barricades, and signage.
Follow all Town and OSHA safety standards, and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Respond to emergency calls for weather events, street hazards, or other urgent conditions.
Perform manual labor and assist other department staff as required.
Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Director or Director of General Services.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, road maintenance, or equipment operation.
Demonstrated ability to safely operate heavy and light equipment used in road and infrastructure maintenance.
Knowledge of proper maintenance and repair techniques for asphalt, concrete, and drainage systems.
Ability to read and interpret basic maps, plans, and work orders.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
Must possess or obtain within six months a valid Maryland Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record.
Certification as a Flagging or Work Zone Safety technician preferred.
Working Conditions
Work performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
Frequent exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment, and traffic hazards.
Requires standing, bending, lifting up to 75 pounds, and operating machinery for extended periods.
Overtime, evening, weekend, or emergency work may be required, particularly during snow removal or storm response operations.
